Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does a Satellite Media Tour Cost?

Talking about our SMT's more than 25 years in The Los Angeles Times, Rogers & Cowan chairman Warren Cowan declared the power of Satellite Media Tours over conventional publicity, saying: "'The Today Show, and 50 other (local TV talk shows and news programs) like it, are more important than The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times put together.' So now (Cowan) arranges satellite press tours for clients who sit in a (TV studio) and do remote interviews all day with, say, Good Morning Detroit, or the noon news in Cleveland and so on, across the time zones."

A Satellite Media Tour costs far less than it would cost to fly across all those time zones and to cities. Bestselling authors were among the enthusiastic first adopters, because they know the exhausting reality of plane trips, rushed limo rides, hotels that all look alike, cardboard food and endless TV shows that made up the conventional two-to-three-week publicity tour.

There are many ways to increase the value of your SMT that offset costs. We have produced thousands of SMT’s and – while we offer many low-cost solutions to increase your audience reach by millions – you will find our pricing is among the most reasonable in the business. We stick to our original estimates, and never quote pricing that is subject to additional expenses upon the project’s completion.

Our travel to the location or studio and all charges related to the production are included in our pricing estimates before we begin. Our clients tell us again and again they appreciate the seamless, turnkey experience we provide. This is really what they are referring to, because it is rare.

We have saved our clients thousands of dollars by securing top-name talent – including nationally-known celebrities, athletes, authors and experts – from our connections with agents, managers, colleagues and friends.

How can I reach the largest possible audience?

  • Select a compelling spokesperson. The single most important component is your on-air talent or spokesperson. TV and radio reporters and program hosts book interviews with a person first, and the topic is always secondary. That is the secret most publicists don’t share, because few clients believe it – and it holds true no matter what the story is. If you feel your spokesperson is “on-brand,” but their on-air presence is lackluster, or they are simply unknown to most journalists, consider hiring someone with great telegenic presence and proven on-air skills.
  • Good Timing. The second most important thing – after a compelling spokesperson, newsworthy topic and interesting visuals if it’s for TV – is timing. In selecting a date for your SMT, try to stay away from Nielsen Sweeps periods, and the week or so leading into or out of them. (Reasons why, and the precise dates are discussed on our blog on this website.) The same holds true for major national holiday weekends – wait a few days before and after them. Timing your project to a designated month, week or day is an excellent idea. We offer many suggestions in a calendar on the aforementioned blog.
  • Have More than One or Two Angles. Every good SMT needs about three irresistible bullet points. The timing of the Tour (a designated month, for example), a recognizable spokesperson, and one or two other points related to the story that draw the journalist in without needing a lot of elaboration are essential.
  • Increase Your Impressions with a 30-Second Consumer-Friendly National News Segment That Includes a Call-to-Action. Add millions of impressions to your SMT with a 30-second piece we produce during your SMT, adding professional scripting, editing and voiceover afterward, along with a call-to-action. We then place the segment on a package of your choice. Most often clients select a combination of National News Channels on DirecTV , which is placement on premium news outlets during a two-hour national news block; and placement on more than 100 TV news websites in top Nielsen DMA markets nationwide, which adds another 12.5 million impressions alone to your SMT. The Audio News Release is also a great way to increase impressions.
